Marvin Sease, 1946-2011

If you had asked me to speculate about which of the veteran performers on the bill at the Midland Theater last February 20 would be the first to pass away, I wouldn't have named Marvin Sease. Bobby "Blue" Bland, God bless him, was distressingly frail. Then again, I thought Bland looked shaky when I first time saw him thirty years ago. He's tough. Shirley Brown and Floyd Taylor weren't exactly doing back flips twelve months ago either. As the evening's top-billed artist, Sease delivered his signature song with gusto. Depending on the context and my mood, lewd soul-blues material like "I Ate You For My Breakfast" can either delight or offend me. Sease died earlier this week.

I loved Marvin Sease -- the man and his music! The range of his voice, his mega talent, the gentleness of his spirit and the love he had for his fans and his music, will live in every person who was lucky enough to ever see him perform and hear his music.

He never acquired the fame that was due to him, but he will be remembered as one of the true masters of his craft!

He loved and respected his fans, women, the "BLUES" and God!

I know God must have needed you Marvin… I can almost hear you singing the “BLUES” ….. all the way up there from heaven -- but our world here on earth will be a little dimmer, sadder and very lonely without you!

I LOVE YOU MARVIN SEASE -- your smile, your voice, your humanity is with me and inside me forever!

Now you will receive the fame from GOD that you have rightly earned and deserve!

Rest well….. I pray your journey to “SOUL HEAVEN” was what you thought it would be -- were the trumpets playing loudly as you took your place among the angels?

“Gone On” too, too, too soon! If only “we could live our lives again”, as you say in your song…….

I just cannot stop mourning about the loss of “YOU”, the loss of “YOU”, the loss of “YOU” …….

YOU WERE AND ARE THE BEST OF THEM ALL....

Marvin Sease..... that name, that artist, that talented legend of a man, with such a beautiful voice, that God HIMSELF reached through the clouds and carried him through the rainbow, in order to have him sing to all of the angels that preceded him....

When they look back on the 20th and 21st century to write the Bible of the "BLUES", from cover to cover, they will all know the name and works of the Marvelous Mr. Marvin Sease!

Mr. Marvin Sease.... let us NEVER forget this true legend who used the highs and "blues" of his relationships to teach us, through his stories and songs, the variables of lust, betrayal, redemption, passion, compassion and ultimately true
L-O-V-E, love!

The depth of this intense man, was much, much deeper than the "Candylicker"!

You are gone, but you will NEVER be silenced!
